ALTAR CLOTH MEASUREMENTS
MEASURING THE ALTAR
(Diagram I)
The Mensa:- Length (L) & Width (W) of Altar Top
Plus:- The Altar Height
MEASURING for an ALTAR CLOTH RUNNER
(Diagram II)
The Cloth Width:- this is usually the same as the width of the Mensa or may include a slight overhang front and back
The Cloth Length:- this is usually the length of the Mensa PLUS
2 x the drop required either side of the Altar.
Altars are usually 1 metre (40") in height so normally the drop (overhang at the side) is 25 -30 cm (10-12") at the side or else 5 - 10cm (2-4") off the ground hence a drop of 90-95cm (36"-38"). Whatever the choice for the drop/overhang the finished Altar Cloth Runner will be the Width (W) x Overall Length (OL) (The Altar length plus 2 x the drop)
MEASURING for an ALTAR CLOTH (Tablecloth style)
(Diagram III)
The Cloth Width/Depth:- (OW=Overall Width/Depth) this is the width of the Mensa plus the total required drop/overhang front and back. (The drop/overhang front and back may not necessarily be same)
The Cloth Length:- (OL=Overall Length) this is the length of the Mensa PLUS
2 x the drop/overhang required either side of the Altar. (The drop/overhang at the sides will inevitably be the same either side)
Where a standard set-size Altar Cloth is required it is probably best to keep the overall overhang fairly equidistant with the longer overhang being at the sides.

CONVERTING METRIC & BRITISH STANDARD MEASUREMENTS
With garments and other items increasingly being made and sold according to metric (centimetres) measurements here is a help to all of us who still think in British Standard 'inches'.
